‘Why MBA?’ is the first question to be answered in any school’s application. ‘Why’ can be answered if ‘what’ is known.

Its obvious from the expansion that the course will be about business. Did you know a bachelors course, BBA, also exists? It does in India. A MA is usually pursued by a BA, a MS by a BE, BTech or BSc. What makes it possible for all these disciplines, and MBBS, BArch, CA and many others, come together for an MBA?

Other masters continue building on the knowledge gained during bachelors and aim towards specialisation in the respective field. MBA uses the experience gathered after the bachelors to create an environment for the students to exploit each others strengths.

MBA is only a means to an end. It is important to put the long term goals before taking that journey. Go on, take a piece of paper and start jotting down your goals. Get rich in 10 years, be a CEO in 20 years, be famous – are these goals? Yes they are. Will an MBA open the doors to reach these goals? No, it wont. Break down the goal and write down the steps to achieve them without an MBA. Get rich – how much? whats your earning now and how should it increase to reach the target? What job will pay that much? If you want to be famous – how famous? Famous for what? World over or your home country? Are there any role models? Mark the steps that you hope a MBA would cover or accelerate.

MBA is more than this. Will write about it again.

Now you are ready to know why MBA.

The interview was the best experience I had till date. Prof. Kulwant and I talked about India, China, Korea, Singpore (of course), Narendra Modi, India & China, the UK and many more topics. I enjoyed it; and left Le Meridien with a feeling of accomplishment. Turns out the mistakes I made were serious. There were several, I’ll go through them in a seperate post.

NUS put me on the waitlist and said the result will be confirmed by the end of May, after the completion of second round of applicaitons. A friend suggested that I should start providing supporting material and strengthen my application. My manager at work gave me the same advice. However, NUS surprised me by confirming the status within a week of being waitlisted. They turned down my application.

I was expecting an email but in a very unconventional approach the results were posted on Reliance Fellowship’s applyyourself page. When the email did not arrive ^[1] till evening, I checked the application page and was disappointed to read that I was not selected. There was no particular reason given, just the usual about number of applicants, not satisfying all the selection criteria and also that there will not be any individual feedback given. This is a wake up call, time to stop relaxing and start concentrating on applications to other schools.

Apparently, there were 1400 entries. That’s a huge number considering the very low level of publicity. I stumbled upon it only when I went to the Stanford website to check if they’ve announced the application deadlines. Googling it would not have given much information couple of months back, the Stanford Financial Aid page was the only place it was announced. And only a few bloggers and MBA web sites talked about it when I checked couple of weeks back.
